Oral Appliances For TMJ

If you have long-standing facial or jaw pain, if your jaw locks or makes clicking sounds, if you suffer from headaches in your temples, unexplained ear pain, or persistent severe neck pain in the morning, you’re probably quite miserable. If the cause of your symptoms has been difficult to diagnose, you may have a TMJ problem, and a custom-fitted oral appliance could help.

At New York TMJ & Orofacial Pain, oral appliances for TMJ (also called TMJ mouthguards) are used to address a variety of problems, such as:

  • Tooth clenching and grinding at night (sleep bruxism)
  •  Morning symptoms such as headaches in your temples, lockjaw, jaw muscle pain, and sore and sensitive teeth
  • Snoring and more serious sleep breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea
  • Daytime jaw over-use behaviors

Our practice philosophy is to get to know you as a person, not just as a patient, so we can get to the bottom of what’s causing your problem. Your symptoms are familiar to us, and we are dedicated to helping you get better. We’ve helped thousands of people by providing the correct diagnosis and care plan, often using oral appliances for TMJ.

What Is The Best Type Of Mouthguard For TMJ?

Not all oral appliances are created equal. If you’re given the wrong type, your pain can actually increase, joint noises can become louder, and lockjaw events can become more frequent (and difficult to release). Even your bite can change. We have also seen many patients who tried over-the-counter oral appliances only to have their symptoms get worse.

At New York TMJ and Orofacial Pain, our team is led by board-certified Orofacial Pain specialists who’ve dedicated their professional lives to helping people who suffer from jaw and sleep breathing problems. We use oral appliances for TMJ to address a specific problem and as treatment progresses, they are monitored and adjusted when necessary. We often complement treatment with mouthguards for TMJ with other supportive therapies to assist in the healing of a TMJ problem or control a snoring and apnea condition.

Many of our patients have found so much relief that they won’t sleep without their TMJ mouthguard.

If you’re suffering from jaw pain or facial pain problems or if you have or suspect you have a breathing disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea, you’re in the right place.
